When the injured little penguin meets a 3D printed prosthesis

According to reports, at the International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, staff installed 3D printed prostheses for a small blue penguin with many amputations. In a video posted online, you can see that the little blue penguin named "Bagpipes" quickly adapted to the prosthesis and tried a few steps.

The "Bag" was discovered in 2007, when its feet were injured by being caught in a fishing line, and only an amputation was possible. Since then it has been unable to walk and swim comfortably. The staff can only cut the foam beer bottle cover to the right size, wrap its stump and give it some support.

The little blue penguin named "The Bagpipe" has regained a "happy big foot" and is still an innovation in 3D printing technology. Mal Hackett, who is responsible for the conservation of penguins, said: "It has many problems, including the infection of the paws (a bacterial infection), and the other intact foot has been severely worn."

The researchers spent 30 hours designing the prosthesis. This is the first time in New Zealand that 3D printing technology has been used for limb repair in wildlife.

In the past 9 years, "bagpipes" have been able to rely on stumps and are susceptible to bacterial infections. “I don’t think anyone in New Zealand used this method for wildlife. It’s good to be able to try this method in a controlled environment so that we can detect any problems at any time,” Ms. Hackett said.

Losing one foot makes the action of the bagpipe very inconvenient and very uncomfortable. It needs to be balanced by wings and cymbals. The staff cut the foam beer bottle sleeve to the right size and then placed it on the residual limb of the bagpipe, giving it some support when walking. This 3D printed prosthesis was donated to the Antarctic Research Center by Dr. Don Clucas of the University of Canterbury. Next, the staff will make further adjustments to the prosthesis to make the "bagpipe" feel more comfortable.
