The Video Optical See-Through Augmented Reality Surgical System (VOSTARS), funded by the European Commission and co-developed by the Information Engineering Department of the University of Pisa, has been researched for more than three years.

Its final product is a hybrid wearable display for guiding the surgeon during surgery.

“The device is capable of superimposing X-ray data on the patient's body,” the engineer explained.

The device is not the same as the VR headset, it can display completely different scenes, and is a surgical guide that combines the real environment with the surgeon's feeling.

VOSTARS is designed with a head-mounted camera that captures the surgeon's every move. These images can be combined with patient medical images from CT, MRI or 3DUS scans.

In addition, the device can also shorten the operation time.

Vincenzo Ferreri, a biomedical engineering and project researcher, said: "By benefiting from this technology, the surgeon will get information on heartbeat, blood oxygen and all patient parameters in his sight."

“In addition, the device will be able to see all the medical information obtained before and during the procedure, fully in line with the patient's anatomy, and provide a virtual X-ray view to the surgeon to accurately guide the procedure.”

The device will also provide information on the type of anesthesia used and the amount of time each patient consumes.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
