The US federal health agency recently discovered that certain antidepressants and anti-epileptic drugs can effectively alleviate the neuropathic pain caused by diabetes. The results were published in the latest issue of the journal Neurology.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 9% of people in the United States have diabetes, and 50% of them have more or less various peripheral nerve pains. Hyperglycemia often causes nerve damage, although some of the symptoms are not obvious. Common symptoms include nerve pain, numbness, and stinging of the legs and feet. The longer you have diabetes, the higher your risk of neuropathic pain. Serious neuropathic pain can be at risk of amputation.

This systematic review summarizes the results based on a number of rigorous research experiments. The researchers reviewed a total of 106 studies.

The results show that antidepressants such as duloxetine and the like can be used as reuptake inhibitors of serotonin and norepinephrine, which have a very significant effect on reducing neuropathic pain. In addition, they found some evidence that anti-epileptic drugs such as pregabalin and anti-depressants such as opium can also effectively reduce pain.

The authors note that long-term use of opioids is not conducive to the relief of chronic pain, as there is no evidence that drugs such as opium have long-term evidence of pain relief and there is a risk of addiction.

In addition, although pregabalin and gabapentin have similar mechanisms of action and are often used interchangeably in clinical practice, the article indicates that gabapentin is not as effective in treating neuropathic pain as the former.

The author hopes that this result will help doctors and patients in the treatment of neuropathic pain.
