[Exclusive] 3D printed skull for face transplantation

Proper surgical planning is the key to successful implementation of complex interventional therapies. Face transplantation is particularly challenging because each patient's bone structure needs to be transplanted due to an accident. To help cope with this type of patient, surgeons at the Brigham Gynecology Hospital in Boston are using a 3D printed replica of the patient's skull to prepare for a facial transplant. They presented their research at the North American Radiological Society meeting in Chicago.

The team first recreated the patient's skull based on the imaging images obtained from the preoperative CT scan. Once confirmed, the data will be sent to the 3D printer and the printer will generate a 1:1 replica of the skull. These models are used to determine the facial bones that need to be treated and where bone fillers need to be added in order to achieve a 100% reduction. This technology saves surgery time, and the original surgery time can be as long as 24 hours or more.
