Danish scientists create helmets that can treat depression.
The device contains tin foil inside and is capable of sending electrical impulses to the brain to stimulate the brain's depression-related parts.
During the clinical trial, two-thirds of patients said that depressive symptoms disappeared when wearing a helmet.
The BBC reported that most patients improved their mood within a week.
Professor Steen Dissing of the University of Copenhagen said that the helmet stimulates the capillaries of the brain by means of electrical impulses. Most patients felt a significant improvement in mood after one week of treatment, and their depression scores improved significantly.
He continued to explain that electrical impulses stimulate the capillaries to produce new blood vessels, because the pulse mimics the principle of the body's own healing.
Compared to the controversial electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), the current delivered through the helmet is relatively small and the user barely feels electrical pulse stimulation. The only side effect of a helmet is occasional mild nausea compared to ECT, which is prone to memory loss.
In the clinical trial of the new helmet, a total of 65 depressed patients in Denmark and New Zealand participated in the trial treatment.
65 people were divided into two groups, 34 were treated for one and a half hours a day, and 31 were treated for one hour a day. The results showed that two-thirds of the people's depressive symptoms disappeared and the patient's symptoms improved every day.
