Medici, based in Austin, Texas, is a telemedicine startup that has raised $24.2 million in recent days under the filing of the US Securities and Exchange Commission. According to founder and CEO Clinton Phillips, the fund is a private investment of 10 people, most of whom are CEOs of non- health care companies. The post-financing funds will be used to set up offices in Europe and South Africa, as well as hiring more employees in the United States, and plans to expand into 12 new states in the United States.
“Although most of them are not from the health care field, they are very happy to see changes in the medical field,†Clinton Phillips said. “A lot of people are people who support 2nd.MD. They know that I have accumulated some expertise, and the accuracy of the industry trend is very good. I think this is a huge opportunity.â€
Connect patient and primary care physician
2nd.MD is a former company of Phillips, and at 2nd.MD, Phillips is still a consultant. Although both 2nd.MD and Medici are telemedicine companies, their user base is very different. 2nd.MD uses telecommunications technology to connect people with very complex health conditions to medical experts to get their diagnosis. And Medici's core model is to connect patients with their private primary care physicians via telemedicine to help patients communicate with doctors via text, videos and photos.
"In contrast, 2nd.MD has a significant advantage in dealing with the complexity of the disease. This is one of the current mainstream models for telemedicine companies," Phillip said. "2nd.MD's team of doctors is the top doctor in top hospitals, addressing one of the most complex parts of healthcare. Medici is not about solving the complexity of the disease, but mainly dealing with the doctor's simple interaction with the patient every day."
Also, in addition to connecting your private doctor, the Medici app has a "Doctor's Day" feature that allows app users to discuss common topics such as Zika and Insomnia. It also allows patients to choose another Medici doctor if their private doctor is not available.
