Injured Syrian medical staff helps themselves improve their prosthetics with 3D printing

After losing his leg, Asem Hasna got a mission. When the 22-year-old volunteer medical staff had just sent the injured rebels into the ambulance to take them to medical care, they lost their legs under the shelling of the Bashar al-Assad army.

His only chance of survival was to smuggle himself and 13 other injured people to the Jordan River as planned, where they could receive treatment. Because it is in a state of constant war, the transfer is not just a difficulty, but almost impossible. The trip to Amman was plagued by various problems, such as stray bullets and complete lack of food and water. The two members of the wounded group died during the trip because they could not be treated. Fortunately, Hasna survived this journey and five follow-up surgeries, and then used his wisdom for innovative prosthetics to help those who are increasingly devastating.

During Hasna's recovery, he participated in a project to train prosthetic technicians in Syria, organized by the Red Cross and the US Department of State. This project is important because the number of injured in the Syrian conflict continues to grow at an alarming rate. Not long after, Hasna realized the great potential of 3D printing technology.

"This is very strange. I know how 2D printers work, but I want to know more about 3D printers, so I use open source software to learn online. You only need to practice and use your own hands. In the practical application of 3D printers There is a low-cost solution. My world has been opened up by open source technology. It has changed my life better and I want to pass it on to the next generation."
