Brain function connection predicts temperament personality

Recently, the team of professors of the State Key Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the team of Professor Jiang Tianzai have teamed up to prove that human brain function connections have strong predictive properties for human intrinsic characteristics such as personality and temperament, and are to explore human individual cognitive ability. Personality development and a powerful tool for early warning and efficacy prediction of related brain diseases. A related paper on this achievement has been published in Neuroimage.

Human temperament personality contains multi-dimensional attributes such as cognition, emotion and behavior. Among them, avoiding harm, exploring novelty, reward dependence and persistence and perseverance are four common personality temperament indicators, reflecting people's dangers and novelties in specific environments. As well as incentives such as rewards for spontaneous reactions. Studies have shown that human temperament is affected by genetic factors and is closely related to the risk of some mental illnesses. However, there are few reports on the individualized quantitative prediction of personality temperament score based on brain function connections.

The researchers obtained the whole brain functional connectivity based on the brain network group map, and predicted the individualized levels of the four temperament scores of 360 college students, and successfully verified in multiple centers. The results showed that the brain regions with predictive performance were mainly concentrated in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, basal ganglia, cingulate gyrus and other brain regions closely related to emotional control and reward loops, and four temperamental personality indicators showed Similar brain function patterns. The researchers believe that this may be because they are regulated by the same genes.

In addition, the study also revealed the important role of the prefrontal-edge system loop in human temperament personality, which helps to deepen the understanding of the pathogenesis of related diseases such as autism and drug addiction.

The team has made a number of achievements in the field of brain imaging-based prediction of multiple cognitive abilities, prediction of non-drug therapy for depression, and longitudinal treatment prediction of various brain diseases, and will further develop the application of clinical translational medicine.
