Radar device monitors baby breathing

Release date: 2008-12-26

Engineers focused on building a prototype monitoring device for the baby's breathing. If the baby stops breathing, the monitoring device installed in the crib will immediately detect the problem and alert the baby's parents.
The device uses Doppler radar to remotely scan the baby's chest breathing movement. Typically, Doppler radar technology is used to navigate or track moving objects - such as airplane landings.
Jenson Lin, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at a university in Florida, is a leading researcher in the use of Doppler radar technology for monitoring. He said that the remote station of the device is equipped with red, blue, green and yellow lights, which represent the vital signs of the baby in different situations. If the parent sees the device sounding a loud alarm and flashing red light through the remote connection video, it indicates that the monitored baby's breathing activity is below the preset range, or that the baby has stopped breathing.
Currently, millions of parents in the United States only purchase such baby monitoring devices, and such devices that remotely transmit sound or video images are very beneficial to babies. In the future, it will be possible to place this remote monitoring device in the mobile phone so that the mobile phone can be turned into a portable vital sign detector.
