Guaranteeing food safety is a manifestation of corporate capabilities

In recent years, domestic food safety problems have frequently been exposed because the occurrence of related incidents has indeed increased, or is the result of increased public awareness and information transparency?

At the 2014 Annual Meeting of the New Champions on September 10th, representatives from food companies and third-party monitoring agencies conducted a lively discussion on the topic.

Lin Peibao, Chairman of PepsiCo Greater China, said bluntly that taking safety as a competitive advantage in the food industry is a sad thing, because “this should be the bottom line for all food companies”. Nan Jishuo, the executive vice president of Nestlé Asia, Oceania, Africa and the Middle East, agrees very much. He introduced the Nestlé supply chain traceability system on the spot and stated that the ideal approach is to kill food safety issues in the bud.

In this regard, Wu Hougang, chairman of the Zhangzidao Group, a leading marine aquaculture company, said in an exclusive interview with the “First Financial Daily” on the site that food safety is not only a problem at the bottom line, but also a question of the ability of the enterprise and it needs to satisfy multiple conditions.

"Food safety has a lot to do with the entire ecosystem. Enterprises must not only establish a good monitoring mechanism, but also fundamentally establish the awareness and value of the ecological environment." Wu Hougang said.

Frequent food safety incidents

Frequent food safety incidents are undoubtedly one of the most talked about topics. From the fact that Fuk Hei was recently exposed to the use of expired and inferior meat, to the recent rumors that a number of companies were involved in the use of cooking oil, they all played a role in the public’s fragile nerves.

In this regard, representatives of participating food companies all agreed that the increase in consumer awareness and information transparency have made food safety issues highly exposed, but this does not mean that related incidents have increased.

According to Wu Hougang, there are three main reasons for the frequent occurrence of food safety incidents. First, the residents’ income levels are rising. People have some new demands on dietary structure and health requirements. Second, in recent years, food safety incidents have been caused by the media. A wide range of social concerns, and related events are no longer confined to one region, but are closely linked to the global event, which also promotes consumers to pay more attention to food safety; Third, the Chinese government is also Continuously improve relevant laws and regulations and conduct stricter supervision on food safety.

“My personal experience is that in the past five years, people’s consumer purchasing power has continued to rise, and consumer confidence has been declining year by year. Consumer confidence and ability are not proportional. This has led to difficulties in business operations and economic development.” Wu Hougang Feelings of emotion.

Wang Tie, senior vice president of Ekang (China) Investment Co., Ltd. and general manager of Greater China, also stated that Chinese consumers are looking forward to a change, from the previous price and weight to quality and safety, which also directly affected the food industry. Promote its transformation and upgrading.

In this process, the company’s capabilities have played a crucial role.

Improve cognition and strengthen control

Lin Bibao emphasized on the forum several times that ensuring food safety should not be used as a company's competitive advantage. “Companies can take advantage of brand and innovation, but safety must be the bottom line”.

Wu Hougang expressed his approval, but at the same time, he also stated that ensuring food safety beyond the bottom line and morality is an embodiment of corporate capabilities.

“Now the problems with food safety are not all in developing countries. There are also developed countries. For example, there are companies in the United States that are flooding seafood products, and Japan’s sewage is discharged into the sea after nuclear radiation. Australia’s and New Zealand’s lobsters are smuggled through Vietnam. In China, these are not only profit-driven, but also have some links that are difficult to control. Therefore, if there is no relevant laws and certain commitments for food safety and governance, the entire market will be indiscriminate.”

In this regard, Wu proposed his own food safety standards: First, all raw material procurement must come from the ecological area, followed by corporate mission and good corporate culture, and the third is to establish scientific and health laws and standards, while supporting With the supervision of a third party agency.

Nestle's experience may be worth learning from. Nan Jishuo introduced that Nestle has thousands of scientists and more than 260,000 tests per day to ensure food safety. In addition, more than 70,000 farmer households have been integrated in the world. In 2013, more than 30,000 farmers participated in Nestle's traceability system, and a tracing center was opened in Beijing to enable consumers to obtain supply chain details through the bottom bar code of a can of milk powder. .
